The following are popular street foods in Indonesia:
1. Mie Goreng (Indonesian Stir-Fried Noodles)
This Indonesian stir-fried noodle dish is a very popular street food and one of the classic national dishes. To prepare it, you need to chop some garlic cloves, shallots, carrots, green vegetables, and bean sprouts. The protein for this dish can be chicken, shrimp, beef, etc. Put some soy sauce in a dish and add some oyster sauce, sriracha, kecap manis (a sweet soy sauce) and sesame oil. Season the shrimp and fry until thoroughly cooked. Remove the shrimp and fry the garlic and shallots in the same pot for a minute or two, then add the carrots and veggies to the pot. Drop in the noodles and sauce and cook for about 2–3 minutes. The final step is to combine everything in a dish. It’s optional to top it up with a fried egg. It’s also the perfect time for a photo that’ll appear on your Indonesian food truck menu template.
2. Gado Gado (Indonesian Salad With Peanut Sauce)
The ingredients for this Indonesian street food include chillies, garlic, peanuts, soy sauce, brown sugar, tofu, potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, cucumber, carrots, broccoli, and any other similar ingredients you want to add to your dish. Chop your veggies up in preparation of cooking or adding to the salad. fry the tofu until its golden brown on all sides and pop the cooked tofu onto a plate. Fry the potatoes until they start to crisp a bit, then transfer them onto the plate with the tofu to cool. Boil your eggs according to personal preference, then separately cook your green beans and broccoli. Toast the peanuts in a pan until golden brown. Pound the toasted peanuts in a mortar or use a blender. Add some chillies to the peanuts while grinding them. Add some water and salt, and mix the ground peanut until it forms a paste. Mix some kecap manis into the paste. In a large dish or platter, combine the tofu with your prepped chopped veggies and peeled and quartered boiled eggs. Pour the peanut dressing over the salad and mix thoroughly before serving.
3. Indonesian Chicken Satay
This is a typical Indonesian dish, but you can find all the ingredients all over the world. The dish uses common ingredients but in an Indonesian style. To make the chicken satay, you need the following ingredients: lemon grass, garlic, sugar or honey, turmeric, vegetable oil, shallots, coriander, cumin seeds, soy sauce, and fresh ginger. Chop the ingredients into small chunks and pop them into a blender, before blending into a thick paste. Slice up some chicken breasts (boneless) and mix them with the paste of ingredients. Refrigerate the mix overnight. Get your bamboo sticks ready by soaking them in water to reduce burning. Thread the strips of chicken on each bamboo stick. Finally, grill the satays and serve.
Any of the above three dishes will easily pass as a traditional Indonesian food truck meal, but here are another three:
1. Kari Ayam (Indonesian Chicken Curry)
To prepare this dish, mix these ingredients in a blender until you get a perfect paste: palm sugar, shrimp paste, turmeric, garlic, ginger, cashew nuts, shallots, chillies, lemon grass, tomatoes, coriander seeds, and cumin seeds. Next, heat some oil in a pot and once hot, scoop in your ingredient mix and fry it for some minutes. Add chicken thighs to the mix and mix properly. Then, introduce some sauce and tamarind paste to the pan. Add some more lemongrass then some bay leaves and lime leaves and cook the items for 15–20 minutes. Pour in some coconut oil and cook for a few more minutes. You can now serve with rice.
2. Perkedel Jagung (Indonesian Corn Fritters)
For this dish, you need the following ingredients: corn, all-purpose flour, rice flour, red onion, garlic, salt, chicken bouillon, black pepper, lime leaves, leek, sunflower oil, water, and eggs. Preparation starts with blending corn in a blender until smooth but the bulk remaining whole. Slice your onions and add them to the corn kernels, and introduce some pressed garlic. Add in the leek and season the whole mixture with salt, black pepper, and any other ingredients that can be used to season it; mix until combined. Chop the lime leaves and add them to the mix. Next, add the flour and pour some water to mix the ingredients. Crack some eggs into the mixture and make into fritters. Deep fry the fritters in hot sunflower oil. Once done, the fritters will turn golden brown. This dish is perfect for a mouthwatering picture that may be used as a background image when you create an Indonesian food truck menu for your brand.
3. Beef Rendang
Rendang once got featured on CNN as perhaps the best food in the world. Interestingly some food items on our Thai food truck menu template and sushi menu template also appeared on the list. Merely looking at the cooked dish would convince you that rendang deserves that position. When you consider the taste and publicity generated around rendang, you’d realise that offering it at your Indonesian food truck will attract a huge fan base of loyal customers.
Beef rendang requires an array of dry and fresh aromatics, most of which will be blended. They include pepper, ginger, garlic, green onion, chillies, shallots, turmeric, candlenuts, lemongrass, beef, and other meats. After correctly preparing this dish, it’ll look so mouthwatering you’ll be unable to resist the urge to take a picture for inclusion in your Indonesian food truck menu template.
You’ll blend most ingredients with some water added to form a paste. Heat some oil in a pot and fry the ingredient paste in this oil until a good amount of moisture is removed. Add the beef to the pot and mix it with the paste. Pour coconut oil into the pot and add salt, palm sugar, and the aromatic leaves. Slow cook for about two hours until the beef is nicely browned. Next, sauté some freshly grated coconut without adding oil or water until it turns light brown. Pound the coconut and add it to your simmering pot. It can now be served with some aromatic rice.
Indonesian cuisine dishes use a wide array of ingredients to build a desired flavour. These ingredients are typically common in all major Indonesian dishes, particularly the main dishes. So, if you want to offer Indonesian meals in your food truck, ensure you establish a stable supply source for these ingredients first. They include garlic, shallots, carrots, greens, chicken sauce, beef sauce, black pepper, salt, sugar, honey, lemon grass, lime juice, chillies, tomatoes, aromatics, ginger, and turmeric powder. All of these are seen a lot in Southeast Asia.
Any of the six food items described on this page is a typical Indonesian food truck meal. However, some, like gado gado, may be more suitable for restaurants because they take longer to prepare than fast food like mie goreng. Other typical Indonesian food truck meals may include otak-otak, nasi goreng, nasi campur, nasi padang, nasi uduk betawi, nasi rawon, sayur asem, sop buntut, and many others.
The layout is just one aspect of the overall menu design process. It’s simply the arrangement of dishes on your menu. Layouts are important, primarily if you sell many recipes. If you're looking for Indonesian food truck menu design ideas, note that most Indonesian food truck menus with few items follow a listicle format featuring food images and prices indicated after each item. However, if your menu items number up to 10, a listicle layout may not work well for you unless you exclude pictures, which isn’t advised for a food truck menu.
